At the end of each EdVenture week, campers and their families set off for an unforgettable overnight camping trip filled with lake swims, games, BBQ, and plenty of fun. It’s the perfect way to wrap up the week and spend time together in the outdoors of Hokkaido.
Here’s a look at what a typical camping day looks like:
It’s camp day!
Families meet at The Orchards early to pack up and hit the road, with gear—and excitement—in tow. (Check out our EdVenture Camping Packing Guide for a checklist of what to bring.)
We rotate between three of our favorite summer spots:
We start the season with Tomakomai and Lake Tōya, then shift to Lake Shikotsu and Lake Tōya later in the summer to catch the best weather.
The drive is part of the adventure. Along the way, we stop for a picnic and visit a few favorite spots like Niseko Gelato, Arishima Ostrich Farm, or other hidden gems.
Once we arrive, it’s time to set up camp. EdVenture mentors guide campers and families as they put up their tents and get the site ready together.
Then, the fun begins! Frisbee, ball games, and original activities created by our mentors to get everyone moving and laughing.
After all that action, we head to the lake for swimming and stand-up paddle boarding. It’s the perfect way to cool off and always a highlight of the day.
Dinner is a classic EdVenture BBQ, with something for everyone. The menu changes slightly each week, but usually includes yakitori skewers, roasted vegetables, salad, and either burgers or hot dogs. We always make sure there's a vegetarian option too, like fried tofu fresh off the grill.
As the sun sets, we gather for one last highlight: the weekly recap video. Campers and families relive the week through photos, laughter, and shared memories.
And of course, we finish with s’mores.
We wake to the sounds of nature and the sun rising over Lake Tōya. After a light breakfast and a final dip in the water, it’s time to break down camp.
Before we go, there’s one last challenge: tug of war—campers vs. mentors vs. parents. Who’s taking home the title of Tug of War Champion?
We end the trip with a group clean-up, leaving the site even better than we found it. Then it’s hugs, high-fives, and goodbyes. Until the next EdVenture.
